Hrvatska nije posebno bogata mineralnim sirovinama pa se ne može ubrojiti u "rudarske zemlje". Kako je eksploatacija mineralnih sirovina primarna djelatnost u gospodarstvu svake zemlje tako i u nas rudarstvo ipak ima veliku važnost.
Po vrijednosti najznačajnija je u Hrvatskoj djelatnost istraživanja i eksploatacije nafte i plina, zanemariva je eksploatacija mineralnih sirovina za proizvodnju metala, eksploatacija nemetala zadovoljava glavninu potreba industrije građevinskih materijala, a po količini izvađenih mineralnih sirovina i broju gospodarskih subjekata najznačajnija je eksploatacija tehničkog građevnog kamena, građevnog pijeska i šljunka te opekarske gline. Tijekom domovinskog rata u Hrvatskoj je eksploatacija mineralnih sirovina skoro prepolovljena i jedino se eksploatacija tehničkog kamena, šljunka, pijeska i gline ponovo vraća na predratnu 1990. godinu.
Iako značajna za gospodarski razvoj i s godišnjom vrijednošću proizvodnje od 600 mil. USD, rudarskoj djelatnosti u Hrvatskoj ne pridaje se dovoljna pažnja. Nosioci rudarske djelatnosti u državi trebaju koncipirati razvoj i nametnuti ulogu rudarstva ukupnom gospodarstvu Hrvatske.

Croatia is not especially rich in mineral ore resources, and therefore it cannot be included into "mining countries". Nevertheless since exploitation of mineral resources is a primary activity in economy of any country, mining in Croatia is given a great significance.
In Croatia, research and exploitation of oil and gas is considered to be the most significant. Exploitation of mineral resources for production of metals is negligable, while esploitation of non-metals satisfies the majority of needs of building-material industry. Regarding the amount of mineral resources taken out of mines and the number of economic subjects, exploitation of technical building stone, building sand and gravel and pug comes first. Expoitation of mineral resources was almost cut in half during the war in Croatia, and only the exploitation of technical stone, gravel, sand and clay is gradually returning to the level reached in the pre-war 1990,
Despite the significance that mining has for economic development and the annual income that it produces, which amounts to 600 milion USD per year, it is not given due respect in Croatia. Leading subjects in that field in Croatia should elaborate a plan of development and enhance the role of mining in the overall economy of the state.
